Colloquially, “the elements” in occultism normally refers to the four elements: Earth, Air, Fire and Water. The term “element” in this sense is not intended to have the same meaning as the modern chemical elements, and criticisms of occultism by chemists on the grounds that “that’s not what the word ‘element’ means at all” are straw-man arguments; indeed, the classical elements had the name first, and the modern elements have essentially usurped the term.
It’s also incorrect to confuse the elements with their most common physical manifestations in this world; the elements more correctly represent abstract ideals of certain specific qualities, namely: heat (or cold) and wetness (or dryness). Specifically:
