(pronounced “triss-meh-JIST-us”)
Legendary teacher or deity, credited with the writing of the Emerald Tablet and hence the creation of the science of alchemy. Literally, his name means “Hermes the Thrice-Great” or “Thrice-Great Hermes”. Whether he was a god or a man, and exactly when he lived (or if he did) is still a mystery; he is variously called a man, a god, the son of either the Greek God Hermes or the Egyptian God Thoth (Tehuti), and many modern commentators believe him to have been a syncretic amalgamation of Hermes and Thoth.
