Ásatrú

(see also Odinism)
Revived and reconstructed form of the pre-Christian religion of the Norse, Germanic, and Scandinavian areas, focusing on worship of Odin, Thor, Freyja and others of the Æsir and Vanir. Ásatrú, an Icelandic word meaning “true to the Æsir”, is also known as Odinism. Whichever name is used, the religion has the benefits of having the Eddas and the Havamal available, allowing a more accurate reconstruction than some other Neopagan religions.

Ásatrú preaches the merits of simple, steadfast values, known as the Nine Noble Virtues. These are:

Practitioners of Ásatrú are called Ásatrúar, with the same word serving as the plural. The term Odinism may occasionally carry a connotation of a more political and less spiritual outlook, but more often the two terms are simply used synonymously.

Groups practicing Ásatrú are generally called troths or kindreds; their meetings may be called meets, moots or folkmoots, and their feasts and religious observances are blots or sumbels.

It should be noted that Ásatrú does not include any component of racism. Certain racist and white-supremacist organizations have adopted various Odinist symbols, but the fact that Ásatrú (and its Paleopagan source material) are being looted by racist groups doesn’t mean there’s any transfer of ideology in the other direction.
