n. A person who practiced a (usually European) polytheistic religion before the rise of Christianity; an ancient Hellene, Celt, etc. adj. Of or pertaining to Paleo-Pagans, their religions or practices.
This term is used by many Neopagans to denote the people who originally practiced the religions that modern Neopagans are simply re-constructing. It’s the natural counter-balance to the common shorthand of “Pagan” to mean modern Neopagans: if just plain “Pagan” means modern, current, reconstructed practices, then how do you distinguish the actual, original practices, on those rare occasions where you need to talk about them? The answer is to use the “paleo-” prefix when it’s appropriate.
