Correspondence

Any magickal, occult, or mystical relation between two things that might otherwise seem (or actually be) unrelated. For example, in Wicca, there’s a common correspondence between directions, elements, times of day, and general qualities, expressed as follows:

Direction    Element    Time of Day    Qualities
East Air sunrise learning, communication, intelligence, speed
South Fire noon creativity, power, energy, dynamism, athletic or martial pursuits
West Water sunset intuition, psychic activity, receptivity
North Earth midnight fertility, stability, plants, nature, growth

So a Wiccan desiring to do a ritual to increase his psychic ability might well incorporate lots of water imagery, schedule the ritual for sundown, include robes, draperies, or other props of blue, start the ritual facing West, and so on.

Ceremonial magicians tend to utilize far more complex correspondence tables, including everything from metals to Tarot cards to Hebrew God-names to animals, plants, and incenses. This allows them to gussy up their rituals with all kinds of interesting and complicated add-ons. Ceremonial correspondences also generally have some numeric component, allowing them to connect with words and phrases by the use of gematria.
