(also, “Law of Thelema”)
Formulated by Aleister Crowley, this law states: “Do what thou Wilt shall be the whole of the Law. Love is the Law, love under Will.”
Far too many alleged followers of this law forget the second half of it, but even the first, when properly examined and understood, should be enough to avoid most of the atrocities and excesses that are committed in its name. Note that “Will” is capitalized; the will referred to is not “whatever you want; whatever passing desire or whim you may feel,” but rather your True Will, the deeper promptings of your soul.
Some Thelemites like to follow Crowley’s practice of opening a communication (such as a letter or an email) with “Do what thou Wilt shall be the whole of the Law” and closing it with “Love is the Law, love under Will”.
