Derogatory term used by most of the occult community to refer to someone who places extreme emphasis on positivity, harmony, pleasantness and happiness – generally to the point where they seem unwilling to admit the existence of negativity or darkness – and who seems to believe that the universe is a genuinely happy place; that all negativity is “just in the mind” and can be avoided by simply not acknowledging it. Though white-lighters are most often aligned with the New Age movement, some Neopagans and especially Wiccans seem to also display white-lighter traits. They are usually avoided (and often mocked) by other Pagans, partly because the white-light belief system is so diametrically opposed to Paganism’s belief in polarity.
White-lighters are also often considered to be flakes in the sense of “overly credulous”; they may additionally be (and often are) flakes in the occult sense of eschewing research and critical thought. The confluence of the two traits means that most white-lighters are also fluff-bunnies.
This term also got picked up by the television show “Charmed”, where it means a quasi-supernatural being that acts as a helpful guardian for witches such as the main characters. This is not the meaning intended by occultists.
